Generating a correct barcode image is only the first step. The barcode must also survive design, export, printing, packaging, handling, and real-world scanning.

Many barcode failures are caused by simple production issues: the image was stretched, the white margins were cropped, the bars blurred during printing, or the label was placed over a curve or seam.

Use this checklist before approving any barcode for production.

Start with the correct value and format

Print quality cannot fix the wrong barcode.

Before working on artwork, confirm:

  • the barcode value is correct;
  • the check digit is valid where required;
  • the format matches the use case;
  • the number belongs to the correct product or asset;
  • the scanner and destination system support the format.

For retail products, confirm the product identifier with the responsible organisation before printing packaging.

Use a vector file where possible

For professional printing, SVG is usually preferable to a screenshot or low-resolution bitmap.

Vector artwork keeps edges sharp when resized. This helps maintain consistent bar widths and clear spaces.

PNG can work well when:

  • it is generated at sufficient resolution;
  • it is used at the intended size;
  • it is not repeatedly resized or compressed;
  • the design software does not blur it.

Avoid copying a barcode from a browser screenshot or messaging app. Screenshots may introduce anti-aliasing, scaling, and compression artefacts.

Keep the proportions correct

Do not stretch a barcode to fit a design.

Scaling a barcode wider without increasing its height, or making it narrower while keeping the same height, changes the relationship between bars and spaces.

Resize proportionally from a corner handle in your design software. Better still, generate the symbol close to the intended output size.

Retail barcode formats have formal dimensional requirements. Follow the applicable GS1 specification or the instructions supplied by your retailer, printer, or verification provider.

Protect the quiet zones

A quiet zone is the blank space around a barcode that allows a scanner to distinguish the symbol from nearby text and graphics.

For linear barcodes, the left and right quiet zones are especially important. Two-dimensional codes such as QR codes also require a clear margin around the symbol.

Do not place:

  • text;
  • borders;
  • icons;
  • product photography;
  • cut lines;
  • other barcodes;
  • packaging patterns

inside the required quiet area.

If a barcode file includes white space around the bars, do not assume it is unnecessary padding.

Use strong contrast

Black bars on a white background are the safest combination.

Barcode scanners need a clear difference between dark bars and light spaces. The contrast they detect may differ from what the human eye sees.

Avoid:

  • red, orange, or yellow bars;
  • dark bars on a dark background;
  • light bars on a dark background;
  • transparent backgrounds over artwork;
  • gradients;
  • patterns behind the barcode;
  • metallic, reflective, or fluorescent inks;
  • low-opacity bars.

Dark blue or dark green bars on a white background may work in some print processes, but they should be tested and verified.

When reliability matters, use black and white.

Choose the right resolution

For raster output, the printer must reproduce each narrow bar cleanly.

Low-resolution images can create:

  • blurred edges;
  • uneven bar widths;
  • grey pixels between bars;
  • missing narrow spaces;
  • visible stair-stepping.

The required resolution depends on the barcode’s physical size, narrowest bar, printing method, and substrate.

Do not simply export a large image and assume it will work. Confirm the final physical dimensions and ask the printer whether the artwork is suitable for its equipment.

Consider print gain

Ink can spread slightly during printing, making dark bars wider and light spaces narrower. This is known as print gain or bar-width growth.

The effect varies by:

  • printing technology;
  • paper or film;
  • ink;
  • plate or print-head condition;
  • press speed;
  • label coating;
  • environmental conditions.

A design that works on an office laser printer may perform differently on corrugated cardboard, thermal labels, flexible film, or direct inkjet printing.

Professional barcode artwork and verification workflows can compensate for expected print behaviour.

Choose suitable label material

The label surface affects scanner performance.

Potential problems include:

  • gloss creating reflections;
  • clear labels allowing background artwork to show through;
  • textured cardboard breaking bar edges;
  • flexible packaging wrinkling;
  • labels lifting at corners;
  • thermal print fading;
  • moisture, dirt, or abrasion damaging the symbol.

Test the barcode on the actual material, not only on plain office paper.

For outdoor, warehouse, chilled, frozen, or high-contact environments, confirm the adhesive and print method are appropriate for the expected lifetime.

Place the barcode carefully

Avoid placing a barcode:

  • over a fold or seam;
  • around a sharp corner;
  • close to a package edge;
  • across a perforation;
  • on a highly curved surface;
  • beneath shrink-wrap distortion;
  • where it will be covered by another label;
  • where products rub against each other.

On cylindrical products, bar orientation matters. Excessive curvature can cause parts of the symbol to move out of the scanner’s reading plane.

Follow the placement guidance relevant to the symbol and packaging type.

Keep human-readable text clear

Where the format normally displays the encoded digits or value, keep them readable.

Human-readable text allows staff to type the number manually when a barcode is damaged or cannot be scanned.

Make sure the printed text matches the encoded value. A mismatch can cause confusion during receiving, support, and stock investigations.

Test using the real workflow

A successful scan with one phone does not prove production readiness.

Test:

  • several printed samples;
  • different scanner units where possible;
  • the actual point-of-sale, warehouse, or asset application;
  • normal scanning distances and angles;
  • labels from the beginning and end of a print run;
  • products after packing and handling;
  • expected lighting and environmental conditions.

Confirm that the destination system receives the exact value, including any leading zeros, letters, separators, or special characters.

Verification versus scanning

Scanning tells you whether a particular scanner can read a particular sample.

Barcode verification measures symbol quality against defined standards using specialist equipment and produces a grade.

For critical retail, healthcare, logistics, or high-volume packaging, consider professional verification. A barcode can scan during an informal test but still perform poorly across different equipment and supply-chain conditions.

Common printing mistakes

Cropping the image tightly

This removes the quiet zones.

Making the barcode too small

Narrow bars may become impossible to reproduce accurately.

Stretching it to fill a box

This changes bar and space dimensions.

Placing it over artwork

Background detail reduces contrast.

Using a JPEG

JPEG compression can blur hard edges. Prefer SVG or a suitable PNG.

Printing one test only

Print variation means one successful label is not enough.

Assuming the printer will fix it

Provide technically correct artwork and communicate barcode requirements explicitly.

Final print checklist

Before approving a production run:

  • Confirm the value and format.
  • Use the correct final dimensions.
  • Preserve proportions.
  • Preserve quiet zones.
  • Use strong dark-on-light contrast.
  • Supply suitable vector or high-resolution artwork.
  • Check the label material and print method.
  • Avoid folds, seams, curves, and reflective areas.
  • Print production samples.
  • Test with the intended hardware and software.
  • Arrange formal verification where the risk justifies it.
  • Store the approved artwork and related product data together.

A barcode is successful only when it scans reliably throughout the workflow, not simply when it looks correct on screen.
