A barcode generator can create a technically valid barcode image, but it does not necessarily create or issue the official number required to identify a retail product.

The number identifies the product or item. The barcode symbol is the machine-readable image that carries that number.
What does a barcode generator do?
A barcode generator takes a value and converts it into a selected barcode format.

What is an official retail barcode number?
Retail products are commonly identified using a Global Trade Item Number, or GTIN.
GTINs may be represented in barcode formats such as:
- EAN-13;
- UPC-A;
- EAN-8;
- UPC-E;
- ITF-14;
- GS1 DataBar;
- GS1 DataMatrix;
- GS1 QR Code.
A business may obtain GTINs or a company prefix through its local GS1 organisation, depending on its requirements.
The identifier is then assigned to a specific trade item according to the applicable allocation rules.
The barcode generator creates the symbol after the number has been obtained and assigned.
Can a random EAN-13 number pass validation?
Yes.
EAN-13 uses a mathematical check digit. Software can generate a sequence whose final digit satisfies that calculation.
Such a number may be structurally valid but still be:
- unregistered;
- assigned to another company;
- assigned to another product;
- outside a range licensed to your business;
- unacceptable to a retailer or marketplace.
A valid check digit is not proof of ownership.
This is why a barcode that scans successfully can still fail during product setup or cause a conflict later.
Does Barcode Safe issue barcode numbers?
No.
Barcode Safe generates barcode images from values supplied by the user. It does not issue, sell, allocate, register, or certify GS1 numbers.
Use Barcode Safe after you have obtained or defined the correct value.
For retail products, confirm the number through the appropriate GS1 or trading-partner process. For internal operations, you may be able to create your own identifier.
When can I create my own barcode values?
You can often define your own values when the barcode remains inside a closed system that you control.
Examples include:
- warehouse bin locations;
- office equipment;
- tools and machinery;
- internal product references;
- files and documents;
- membership cards;
- event assets;
- work-in-progress items;
- manufacturing stations;
- stock that is not entering an external retail system.
Code 128 is a common choice because it can encode letters, numbers, and punctuation efficiently.
Code 39 may be appropriate where an older system requires it.
Before designing the numbering system, check that your software does not already impose a format or generate its own identifiers.
How should internal barcode numbers be structured?
An internal identifier should be unique, stable, and easy to manage.
Avoid encoding information that may change. For example, putting a current shelf location inside a product’s permanent ID can cause problems when the item moves.

You can store changing information such as location, owner, condition, or category as separate fields in your barcode library.
Good internal identifiers are:
- unique;
- never recycled unnecessarily;
- long enough for future growth;
- consistent in length and format;
- documented;
- independent of temporary attributes;
- compatible with the selected barcode symbology.
Do Amazon, Shopify, or retailers require GS1 numbers?
Requirements vary by platform, product category, market, and retailer.
Some marketplaces validate product identifiers against GS1 data or require recognised GTINs for normal listings. Some products may qualify for exemptions or use different identifiers.
Shopify can store barcode values in product and variant data, but using Shopify does not itself issue an official retail GTIN.
Do not rely on a generic article for a specific listing decision. Check the current rules of the exact marketplace or retailer before purchasing numbers or printing packaging.
Can I buy cheap barcodes from a reseller?
Businesses should carefully evaluate third-party barcode sellers.
A number may scan correctly but fail ownership or brand verification, conflict with platform requirements, or remain associated with another business in registry data.
For products that matter to your brand and supply chain, obtaining identifiers through the recognised GS1 route generally provides clearer ownership and traceability.
Ask the retailer or marketplace whether reseller numbers are accepted before relying on them.
How do I verify a barcode number?
Verification can mean several different things:
Check-digit validation
Confirms that the digits follow the mathematical rule for the format.
Registry verification
Checks information associated with a GTIN through an authoritative service such as Verified by GS1.
Product assignment review
Confirms that your organisation has assigned the identifier to the correct product and variant.
Print verification
Measures the physical quality of the printed barcode using standards-based verification equipment.
A barcode project may require all four.

- Confirm the retailer or marketplace requirements.
- Obtain the appropriate GTIN or prefix.
- Assign the number to the correct product.
- Record the assignment in your product system.
- Generate the correct barcode format.
- Download suitable artwork.
- Place it on the packaging without altering its proportions or quiet zones.

- Verify the final symbol where required.
